(KLTV) - New data shows many East Texas counties have higher than average obesity and inactivity rates, so one organization is looking to change the shape of the region.
NetHealth CEO George Roberts said despite efforts to promote healthy lifestyles in East Texas, the behaviors leading to chronic illnesses.
"East Texas has a high rate of obesity, high rates of diabetes, higher heart disease rates," Roberts said.
The annual Lighten-Up East Texas challenge kicks-off Friday in Tyler, and by capitalizing on the New Year's resolutions of individuals and groups, Roberts hopes the to turn those numbers around. Dietitian Natalie Overstreet said losing weight is more than stepping on the scale or cutting back on some of those guilty pleasure foods.
"It's more than just calories in calories out you do have to make sure you're eating the right type of calories to really get the most out of your workouts,"Overstreet said.
Overstreet said exercising in groups has proven to be a more successful way to lose weight than going it alone, adding that accountability plays a large role.
"You don't want to be the only one in the group that's not working out or not following the diet plan,"Overstreet said.
Roberts said those who participated last year in the weight loss challenge shed more than 9,000 pounds. Roberts adds that for those who drop more than five percent of their body weight will be entered to win prizes.
"Once that carrot out there that will encourage people, maybe their on the fence about should am i ready to lose weight or not," Roberts said.
The weigh-in for Lighten-Up East Texas runs from 5-8 p.m. on Friday at the Broadway Square Mall in Tyler. Participants will have until May 9th to get in shape and weigh-out.
